Lot 1873		1852. NGC graded AU-53. Original toning. No deviation in the sharp relief seen at Liberty and the eagle with the possible exception of some lack of definition on the hair curls below the ear and back of the neck, not even in the centers of the coin. Some minor scuffs in the luster are consistent with the grade and size of the coin. This includes some roughness by the first star and a little graze by the 11th star. Most of the stars show detail but we could not call them sharp. The reverse displays a good 90 percent-plus luster. Pop 182 (PCGS # 8906) . Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000. Lot 1874		1853-O. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck and untoned with reflective mint luster within the protected areas. Only 71,000 minted of which merely 351 examples are estimated to have survived. According to the authoritative Bowers Red Book of Double Eagle Coinage, the 1853-O "is the gatekeeper to what becomes a series of hard-to-find New Orleans double eagles." Usually with areas of light striking in the centers of the obverse and reverse. this choice AU58 example is very bold throughout, and includes full stars. Lot 1875		1854. Small date. PCGS graded MS-61 CAC Approved. Lovely delicate golden-orange toning. A popular Red Book variety. The small date variety is the commoner of the two this year. The breakdown of 1854 twenties from the S.S. Central America is interesting with 36 Small Date and 7 Large Date coins recovered. Many collectors and dealers are not aware of the Large Date's existence, nor of their relative rarity and subsequent value until the Red Book started listing them separately. Lot 1877		1858-O. PCGS graded AU-50. A hint of light gold tone. Only 35,250 struck. The 1858-O is a rarity, and fewer than 150 are believed to exist in all grades from an original mintage of 35,250. However, examples are available for reasonable prices. This is a very pleasing specimen, and a remarkable survivor in what is considered to be a challenging New Orleans mint issue. As such it is a higher end condition rarity. This is a very challenging coin to find in higher grades, as the census shows: Pop 19; 38 finer. Only 1 graded in Mint State (PCGS # 8924) . Lot 1879		1861. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. CAC Approved. Only 7,125 examples are estimated to have survived. A nice frosty coin. This Choice AU representative is one of the finer examples of the 1861 issue available today. The pale reddish-gold fields show strong, distinctly surface luster that is largely unaffected by the coin's minor wear. Both sides show better-than-average detail, and on the obverse, even the often-weak left stars have visible lines and centers. They are quite bold. Any abrasions are light and inconsequential. Hence, the overall eye appeal is better than the grade might suggest, as the coin shows fewer marks than usual on the portrait (PCGS # 8932) . Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100. Lot 1882		1864-S. PCGS graded EF-40. Nice golden toning increases the interest in the San Francisco Mint issue from the time of the great American Civil War. Out West, fifteen hundred or more miles from the action, the public, although following the war news closely, was mostly unaffected by the events going on between the North and the South. Collectors are often content with an average baggy BU Type 2 Double Eagle and the 1873 open '3' variety is readily available. In most cases the grades tend to stop at MS61-62 although some upper Mint State examples are also found with a great deal of looking. If you are a collector who needs a choice Type Two twenty, one with eye appeal, the 1873 Open 3 offered here is your coin. No beating about the bush, this is a dandy MS63. Lot 1886		1873. Open 3. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck and frosty, a splendid offering. That is what makes numismatics so exciting. It is full of stories about old-time hoards of gold coins like the present Liberty Type 2 twenties where one knows everyone who is anyone will be out to bid. The result of careful grading today, each and every one deserves to be studied in a manner that would never have been tolerated in the happy-go-lucky days of pre-Third Party grading. The coin seems to remember everything about what it was like to be struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1873, it�s fresh appearance right there to behold and so unlike most early twenties. Lot 1901		1877-CC. NGC graded AU-55. Light golden toning. Only 42,565 struck. The mintage of the 1877-CC dropped noticeably in this year, resulting in pieces being somewhat scarce today. Possibly as few as 800 to 1,200 exist in such grades as VF to EF, this being standard for most pieces on the market before 1980. Since that time there have been many imported, these being for the most part in the EF to AU level. We suspect that these were sent overseas from San Francisco (nearest major port) in the 1870s as part of mixed circulated gold coins. A distinctive new type was introduced this year, with differences on the obverse and reverse, the former including the head of Liberty (which opened up more space for the date logotype), and the latter with the denomination as TWENTY DOLLARS. On the obverse the date was deeply impressed into the die, much closer to the dentils than to the neck truncation. On the reverse the CC mint letters are large and are below the eagle's tail. The present AU55 exhibits delicate toning and extensive original luster. Pop 124 (PCGS # 8983) . Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500. A very scarce twenty in strict mid-range About Uncirculated condition. The original coinage total gives a hint of the rarity of this date. This piece is one of only a very few offered by this service in recent years. The surfaces are nicely lustrous, with only light wear on the highest design areas. Each side, though fresh with frostiness, is affected by scattered (but small) abrasions and scuffs, none of which are large enough to be mentioned. A desirable coin in this grade (PCGS # 9004) . Lot 1908		1893-CC. PCGS graded AU-50. Housed in an OGH. Nicely toned. Only 18,402 pieces struck. Anyone appreciating original gold will rejoice when observing the untouched nature of this specimen. No cleaning signs are found in the fields and the original "skin" of the coin in intact. While the 1893-CC may be a "type" candidate for a Type III Carson City double eagle, do not let that fool you into thinking that the present coin is anything other than scarce! (PCGS # 9023) . Lot 1909		1895-S. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning. Pop 167; 15 finer, 8 in 64+, 7 in 65. The U.S. Double Eagles, whose net gold content is .9675 of an ounce, actually weigh more than an ounce, because they have 10% copper alloy in them to make them tough and not easy to damage in circulation. At the time they were current (1850-1933) the gold "standard" equated to $20.67 per ounce. This is a gorgeous, near-Gem specimen from the scarcer period of the mid-1890s. It was struck at the Mint in San Francisco and has typical S-mint luster flash and sparkle that collectors so admire. Because the surface is much nicer than average, we include the PQ qualifier to more forcefully describe it (PCGS # 9028) . Estimated Value $3,700 - 3,900. It is interesting to see, as well, that it was struck from well-prepared dies that imported a sound and in point of fact, a bold design in the all areas (PCGS # 9040) . Lot 1919		1903. NGC graded Proof 64. A dazzling, totally brilliant untoned Proof specimen and quite choice for the given grade. Although 158 were struck, Akers estimates the number of surviors between 25 and 30, making the 1903 rarer in Proof than the 1900, 1901 or 1902 and on par with the 1898 and 1899. This resplendent near-Gem Proof has heavily reflective fields and motifs with choiceness beyond and above and below and throughout what you�d expect. All design details are sharply defined. They are struck as if the dies really meant it! A few wispy hairlines in the field only distract marginally from the overall eye appeal of this handsome double eagle. Both sides have wavy fields, often seen on Proof gold coinage during this and later years. (See our supplied note at the end of the description explaining how this comes about. Or, if you prefer, skip the end note and read until the finish of this paragraph before digging out your checkbook to confirm that you have funds enough to issue a suitable bid.) End of paragraph. Pop 7; none finer (PCGS # 9119) . Historic Note: After the dies are hubbed and the date applied, the die is given multiple polishes with progressively finer and finer polish -- regardless of whether they are destined for regular production or for use in coining Proofs. The last polish given to the dies prior to being hardened gives the field a mirror surface. This is the deepest mirror attainable on the dies. When the die is hardened by heating, the metal shrinks slightly creating a wavy effect on the polished surfaces. Some say this looks like the surface of an orange. When you see orange peel on a Proof issue, such as this lovely 1903 Twenty, you can be sure that it is one of the freshest examples struck from those dies. Repolishing an already hardened set of dies will produce a flatter, more shallow mirror. Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.
